Canterbury-based National MPs are launching a volunteer project to help residents from quake-affected properties move their garden plants to a new community plant nursery.

National MPs Amy Adams, Gerry Brownlee, David Carter, Aaron Gilmore, Nicky Wagner, and Kate Wilkinson are getting in behind ‘Project Plant’, which aims to help keep people’s favourite plants alive while they are without access to their garden.

“Many residents – especially the elderly – put a huge amount of love and effort into growing and maintaining their garden,” Aaron Gilmore says.

“For those forced from their home because of quake damage, having to walk away from their garden at the same time can be an extra kick in the guts.”

The Community Plant Nursery will be set up in Marshlands on land being offered by local residents, the Chapman family. It will accept plants such as roses, rhododendrons, and small fruit trees from properties from all over Christchurch and Kaiapoi.

“Plants from damaged properties will be moved by volunteers, under the guidance of Maggie Barry and other gardening experts, to the Community Plant Nursery while owners rebuild or relocate over the next 12-24 months,” Mr Gilmore says.

In general, owners will be responsible for looking after their own plot at the nursery, but support will be available for those with mobility or health issues. Donations are welcome to help cover costs.

“Our team of Canterbury-based National MPs will dig in as part of ‘Project Plant’ on the weekend of 14-15 May, and we need as many volunteers to help as possible. I am pleased that a number of local organisations have indicated their support so far.”

“There has been so much good-will already in our community. This is another way to make a small but significant difference to help those who have already suffered more than their fair share of hardship,” Mr Gilmore says.

Mr Gilmore says he will invite Christchurch-based MPs from all parties to get involved and help encourage volunteers to sign-up to help.

Residents who want their plants moved to the community nursery, or who wish to volunteer should call 03 382 5617 or email projectplant@parliament.govt.nz

Registrations are being sought before Mothers’ Day (8 May).
