Land rezoning announcement
Posted by Aaron Gilmore on November 17th, 2011Today at 2.30 pm, CERA announced that due to the very significant area-wide works required for Brooklands, it would have to be rezoned from orange to red zone. For some, this announcement will be distressing, while for others it will be welcomed. For this to happen to an entire community is difficult and disappointing, but due to the very high risk of frequent future flooding which has been worsened by the earthquakes, the area would need to be raised by around 2 metres. This would require every house to be removed and rebuilt to bring the area to an insurable standard, as well as all the infrastructure to be replaced. This would take years to achieve and with no certainty of success. As I have mentioned at a number of meetings locally, the decision is based on sound engineering advice. As well as extensive media information, the community will receive individual letters. CERA will also be undertaking local briefings to the community explaining why the decision has been made and what it means.
