Adult and Community Education Here To Stay
Posted by Aaron Gilmore on July 3rd, 2009The National-led Government is placing priority on giving people access to adult and community education courses that directly target literacy, numeracy, and foundation skills. We believe these are the skills that give people the best opportunity to pursue further study or gain employment.
As such, Government funding for adult and community education is changing from next year. Schools, polytechnics, universities, and wänanga will be investing in courses mainly focused on these skills. We are providing $124 million over the next four years for these courses.
Our decision to refocus funding hasn’t been made lightly. We have had to make tough but necessary decisions to prioritise our education spending into areas where it gets the best results. That’s why we are spending more money to fund front-line services in our schools and ensure children receive a quality education. And that’s why we are funding adult and community education in literacy, numeracy, and foundation skills.
