A High School for North East Christchurch
Posted by Aaron Gilmore on July 13th, 2008Recently I attended a public meeting hosted by other Parklands Residents along with the local incumbent Labour MP. At that meeting we discussed the issue of the need for a high school for the North East of Christchurch. It was plainly clear the Govt. was not interested nor was the incumbent Labour MP in discussing it further and instead thinks that parents are mistaken. The incumbent MP evcn had the ridiculous notion that the 5,000+ people that have built houses in the NE in recent years, don’t have children or that they are empty. Well sorry - those of us that have kids and live here know otherwise. This shows how out of touch and arrogant Labour have become. God only knows what they have been telling the Ministry of Education.
Local public opinion on this issue is high. As such I have commenced a petition to seek to have this issue investigated by the Ministry of Education for a new high school to service the children of NE Christchurch. In support of this I have gathered considerable information on local demographics and population projections and other supporting data. As an example according to 2006 Census data NE Christchurch is one of the fastest growth areas in NZ. The last 24 months has seen this continue with rapid increases in the number of births and by my count 7 new local preschools opening to cater for new kids. My own kids have attended one of these. You can also join the hundreds of people who support this issue and sign my petition by emailing me. I will post further on this as time passes.
