Christchurch-based National MP Aaron Gilmore is welcoming Canterbury’s first major KiwiSport launch, at Chisnallwood Intermediate School in Avondale starting May 11.

“KiwiSport in schools delivers on the National-led Government’s promise to help more children participate in organised sport,” Mr Gilmore says.

“It’s great to see Linfield Sports Club jumping on board to help cater for 600 Chisnallwood students who will get to try a range of sports and activities. Chisnallwood is a leading school in areas like music and drama and is now increasing its focus on sport.”

“Organised sport is important for building fitness, coordination, teamwork and leadership skills. Healthy habits learnt as youngsters can last a lifetime.”

Government investment worth $2.2 million for 2009/2010 is going towards encouraging participation in organised sports in the Canterbury/West Coast region.

“KiwiSport puts the money where it is needed – in schools, clubs or community organisations, so that more children can participate in sports,” Mr Gilmore says.
