The Government’s decision to include the Christchurch motorway projects as part of the first seven nationally significant roads in New Zealand will lead to reduced congestion, improved safety and boost much-needed economic growth in the area, says National MP Aaron Gilmore.

The Christchurch projects are part of the Government’s seven roads of national significance which means priority funding and possible completion dates by 2019.

“In particular, the northern motorway project from Belfast to Mairehau will reduce congestion in roads such as Marshland Road and give local residents better access, as will a new western bypass that will link points north and south of Christchurch with the international airport.

“I am delighted that Christchurch is part of the National-led Government’s commitment in accelerating significant road infrastructure projects that will help kick-start local economies.

“It comes at a time when communities are feeling the pinch from the global economic meltdown and job security will be at the forefront. These projects will filter through to boost local tourism and create new jobs, as well as lifting existing industry and businesses.

“The real winners will be the local residents as benefits from improved access to Christchurch, New Zealand’s second largest city will be a reality sooner rather than later,” said Mr Gilmore.
