Building more healthy homes sooner for Cantabrians
16 February 2009
Ten needy families in the Canterbury/Westland areas will get new homes under the National Government’s fast-track on state housing funding. The eastern suburbs of Christchurch will benefit from the National Government’s plans to fast-track an investment of $104.5 million to improve 10,000 state houses and to build 69 new state houses across New Zealand, says National Party MP Aaron Gilmore.
“I am delighted that this much needed investment will mean at least ten families currently languishing on the waiting list for state housing in the Canterbury/Westland areas will soon be in their own homes.
Ninety per cent of the new homes being built will be 4-5 bedroom homes, with an average size of 160m2.
In addition, $12.8 million will be spent on improving and upgrading the Canterbury/Westland existing state housing stock, more than 10% of the total funding allocated.
It is likely to include a mix of insulation, ventilation, heating, redecoration, kitchen and bathroom upgrades, strengthening and roofing.
“The National-led Government believes New Zealanders have a right to warm, dry and healthy homes. This initiative will go some way in achieving that aim,” said Mr Gilmore.
